DO'S AND DONT'S
PLEASE READ
VERY CAREFULLY
We wish you many years of happiness with your new Boxer and hope that the
following may be of assistance to you.
DO REMEMBER - the Boxer is not a dog - he/she is a person! Boxers - more
than most breeds - are tremendously dependent upon human companionship.
DON'T FORGET -
A 'rescued' dog is quite a different proposition from a new puppy who will
normally settle very quickly. Your new 'Welfare' Boxer has been uprooted
from the home he/she knows, not knowing why, and is going to feel very
unsettled and probably bewildered. You know your home. He/she does
not know our home yet. Give him/her time. This is when he/she may scratch
your doors if shut in. Do not leave him/her for lengthy periods. If
eventually you must leave him/her for a couple of hours, start off by doing
it in stages. No longer than five minutes to start with - and then plenty
of praise, if all is well. Then gradually increase the time - so that they
get the message that you are coming back.
DON'T OBJECT - If he/she wants to come to your bedroom at night. Take the
bed there so that he/she can be near you. The rescued dog is bound to feel
insecure and confused and will be happier if he/she knows you are near.
DON'T outside the confines of your home and garden, immediately let him/her
off the lead. (AT LEAST three weeks). First let him/her gain confidence in
you (Flexi leads are a boon initially).
DO NOT give him/her a bone for several weeks. He/she may guard it against
all comers!
WAIT until he/she has your confidence. When you do give a bone, it should
be a large marrowbone, not one that will splinter.
ALWAYS REMEMBER to follow the GOLDEN RULE, when it is time to let
him/her off the lead.
Call him/her back to you several times during the walk, praise him/her, and
even give a titbit (i.e. Vetzyme), let the run off again, before finally
putting them back on the lead to go home. Let them ALWAYS associate
coming back to you as a pleasure and you should have no problems. NEVER,
NEVER scold them when they come back to you - however long you have had to
wait!
PLEASE REMEMBER to get a name disc for his/her collar. It is always
advisable only to have your name, address and telephone number
inscribed. The dog's name on the disc makes it very easy for someone to
entice them away! Or you may wish to consider micro-chipping. If you join
the Kennel Club Companion Dog Club you will receive a disc (see later).
REASONS FOR RE-HOMING are many, but often the dog has not been loved as much
as a Boxer needs. He/she may be untrained (which is not their fault).
Because of lack of attention and /or understanding, or even interest, he/she
could have acquired bad habits.
REMEMBER TOO he/she may have been ill-treated or neglected.

DESPITE THAT people think that all Boxers like children; your new lad/lass
may not! He/she could be a rehousing case because the pulling about he/she
had from children became too much to bear.
IT MAY BE that he/she has been in kennels between homes. This can be another
traumatic experience for the dog.
DON'T EXPECT miracles overnight. Don't panic if he/she isn't behaving like
your friend's dog which was bought at eight weeks and is now four years
old. Your 'new' Boxer may be suspicious at first, resulting from the
upheaval which has befallen him/her. PLEASE don't rush things.
DO PLEASE BEAR with him/her and have the utmost patience. Often it is only
love and understanding that have always been lacking.
ALWAYS REMEMBER the three P's. PATIENCE, PERSEVERANCE AND PRAISE.
DO THINK about third party insurance. The Animals Act of 1971 puts the
liability for any accident caused by your family pet firmly on you.
DO KEEP his/her boosters up to date.
UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES may a rescue Boxer be used for breeding.
WE DO NOT pass on any pedigrees, or registration certificates. But, if
available, we pass on the Inoculation Certificate and any notes on diet,
medical history, likes and dislikes, etc. which may be helpful.

SO WHY NOT TAKE him/her to a reputable Dog Training Club. The Kennel Club
will send you a list of Clubs in your area. The Kennel Club, 1-5 Clarges
Street, Piccadilly, London W1Y 8AB.
OR IF you are within travelling distance of St. Albans, come along to our
meetings at the Charles Morris Hall, Tyttenhanger Green. Details are given
in News Link.
WE HOPE THAT it will not be the case, but should your circumstances alter
and you find that you can no longer manage your 'Rescue Boxer' - he/she
MUST be returned to Home Counties Boxer Welfare.
FINALLY we do not buy and sell dogs, nor do we act as agents for Breeders.
All the work done is purely voluntary, and in spare time, and we therefore
have to exist entirely on donations and fund raising events. Transporting,
kennelling, boosters, sometimes other veterinary treatment, and indeed
telephoning, all add up considerably - SO PLEASE MAKE SURE that your
donation is a realistic one.
OH! A P.S. Do let us know how things go and keep us informed. We are very
please to receive articles which we can include in the magazine. We would
also love to have a photo of YOUR BOXER. With all our four-legged clients
we cannot telephone everyone too often - but you can always 'phone us.
Whenever possible and convenient, we do make follow up visits.
